A closer look at Expansion 17 Saiyan Boost

On Friday, Bandai shared with fans the very exciting news that two new expansion sets were coming to the DBS CG in the form of Saiyan Boost and Namekian Boost. Both of these new sets will introduce a brand new keyword skill into the game, which will change the way Unison Cards are played and their relation to other Battle Cards. In this article, we take a deep dive into the first of these DBS CG sets, Expansion 17 Saiyan Boost.

What Is Boost?

The Spirit Boost keyword skill will come with Battle Cards and will allow you to remove Unison Markers from your Unison Cards to activate their powerful effects. This means that decks using Spirit Boost cards will change up the traditional Unison strategy and will use the markers to fuel other Battle Cards instead.

SS Son Goku, Spirit Boost Striker

The main Unison Card coming with the Saiyan Boost Expansion set is ‘SS Son Goku, Spirit Boost Striker’. When a counter is used to activate the Spirit Boost effect, you can increase the power of a blue Saiyan Battle Card by +5000. The +1 marker skill of this card lets you switch this card to Rest Mode so that you can play a skill-less Battle Card with an energy cost of 2 from your energy. You then get to replenish your energy with a card from the top of your deck. The -1 ability of this card is incredibly useful, letting you return one of your opponent’s battle cards, of any energy cost, to their hand.

Expansion 17 Saiyan Boost

Bardock, Spirit Boost Avenger & SS Bardock, Spirit Resonance

No Saiyan set is complete without the father of Goku making an appearance. ‘Bardock, Spirit Boost Avenger’ gains Critical when using the Spirit Boost ability that costs just one marker. If this card is used for energy, it loses this skill for the rest of the game. This means that it counts as a skill-less Battle Card in your energy, which allows ‘SS Son Goku, Spirit Boost Striker’ to play it for free.

‘SS Bardock, Spirit Resonance’ can use ‘Bardock, Spirit Boost Avenger’ to Evolve. The Spirit Boost skill of this card costs 2 markers but does give your Leader +5000 power and switches it to active mode so that it can attack again. If you do use this skill, however, its keyword skills are negated for the rest of the turn, so you will want to make sure you use them beforehand.

Ultimately, with the Goku Unison playing ‘Bardock, Spirit Boost Avenger’ for free, you can play ‘SS Bardock, Spirit Resonance’, which has Dual Attack, for just 3 energy. This card does have a Limit 2, which means its skill can be used twice in one turn!

Expansion 17 Saiyan Boost

Hunt of the Demon God

This card is incredibly versatile and can be played in any deck, not just the blue Saiyan boost cards. This Counter:Counter will stop the skill of an Extra Card with an energy cost of 1, if it was played for free and if your Leader and your energy are all the same colour. This will be incredibly helpful against the 1 cost deck staples such as ‘Dimension Magic’ and ‘Dormant Potential Unleashed’. By removing this card from the game via the drop, the Spirit Boost skill of ‘Hunt of the Demon God’ allows you to negate the skills of an opponent’s card and stops them from attacking, as long as it has a higher energy cost than the amount of energy they have.

Android 17, Ki Channeler

The only card in the Expansion 17 Saiyan Boost set that doesn’t have a Spirit Boost skill is ‘Android 17, Ki Channeler’, which allows you to sacrifice an energy to play it from the energy. Also, you can send another energy to the drop to remove a marker from an opponent’s Unison Card. Although scrapping energy sounds incredibly risky, it does work with the Awakened ‘Self-Control Android 21’ Leader that allows you to draw a card and then replenish the lost energy with a card from your drop area.

Content Of The Set –

You will receive two silver holo versions of each card mentioned above when purchasing the Saiyan Boost Expansion Set, as well as two packs of Supreme Rivalry and one pack of Battle Evolution. You will also receive the new DBS CG blue dice, which will help keep tabs on your Unison markers.

With the recent release of the Supreme Rivalry set, it’s no surprise that these new expansion sets are designed to work with some of the cards from the latest booster as well as older archetypes. An example of this would be the Gohan Leader that can awaken if a blue skill-less card is played from the energy by the Goku Unison +1 skill.

The Saiyan Boost Expansion 17 Set will release on June 25th. If you would like to learn more about the Namekian Boost set, as well as all the latest DBS CG news, make sure you follow Ludkins media on Instagram and Facebook
