It’s been a long journey for Digimon Survive, first being announced way back in 2018 for the PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. After several setbacks and a disruptive development team change, the game finally releases today worldwide, offering Digimon fans a very original and much darker Digimon title to get stuck into.
Digimon Survive will begin with a group of classmates going on a historical studies trip during spring break. During this trip, some of the students come across an ancient temple where they discover a friendly Koromon. Unfortunately, some not-so-friendly Digimon also turn up and begin attacking the others. At this point, they realise they have inadvertently entered a new world full of Digital Monsters.
Digimon Survive is a tactical turn-based JRPG (Japanese role-playing game), which includes 100 Digimon. The art style of the game looks similar to the style of the recent Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna movie that was released last year. This darker tale follows a running theme we’ve seen throughout the Digimon franchise; watching the bonds of friendship between the Tamers and their Digimon grow.
The choices a player makes within Digimon Survive will affect the gameplay, which will lead to multiple endings depending on your decisions. Not only does this game sport some stunning graphics, designed in a 2D anime, classic SRPG style, but also has an incredible soundtrack created by Tomoki Miyoshi, the video game composer behind the popular Japanese game ‘I am Setduna’. Digimon Survive will include classic, turn-based combat, as well as plenty of text-based gameplay. Overall, the game will include over 100 Digimon spanning several eras of the Digimon franchise.
It’s no secret that Digimon Survive has had its fair share of development issues over the last couple of years. Digimon Survive was announced in 2018 with developers Witchcraft taking the reigns of its production. After running into an array of problems, which included an engine change and delays caused by Covid, a development team called Hyde was drafted in to get the game over the finish line.
A special Digimon Card Game promo pack will be available for those purchasing the game in Japan. The three promo cards coming with the Digimon Survive Release Commemorative Promotion Pack will be Agumon, Labramon, and Falcomon, with their Tamers from Digimon Survive, Takuma, Aoi, and Minoru, seen in the top corner. Unfortunately, these cards will not be included with the English release, with Bandai stating they will be available at a later date. It is likely we will get these cards as box toppers or released within an event pack.
During the Digimon Con 2022 live stream, Bandai also announced that there is a new Digimon Story game in development, which will have the Olympos XII as the main focus of the game. This game was being developed alongside Digimon Survive but has no release dates as of yet.
Digimon Survive is available right now on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch. To keep up to date with all Digimon updates, as well as Digimon Card Game news, make sure you follow Ludkins Media on Instagram and Facebook.
