eBay, one of the largest global auction sites, has today announced the expansion of its Authenticity Guarantee service to all TCG items sold for over $750 in the United States.
The launch of TCG Authenticity Guarantee will initially include all collectable sports and non-sports cards like Pokemon sold for over $750 on the eBay platform. eBay is looking to expand this service by mid-2022 to all purchases over $250.
Collectable trading cards are one of the biggest categories of sales for eBay with reported sales above $2 billion for the first half of 2021 so this step seemed like the next logical move to bring in more collector’s to eBay’s platform and fight against the rise in counterfeit cards.
eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee program is well-known to sneakers and watch enthusiasts and works by having the seller ship their TCG sale directly to eBay for authentication. After thoroughly inspecting the card, eBay will then provide proof of authentication and special packaging which also works as a nice display piece. eBay will then ship the card to the buyer alongside a QR code which confirms authenticity for future sales.
On the official website, eBay breaks this service into four steps:
- Look for cards with the blue Authenticity Guarantee checkmark and make your purchase.
- The seller ships your card to the authentication facility.
- Your card is verified and authenticated through a multi-point inspection process and receives a tamper-proof sticker and a QR code confirming the authentication.
- The professional authenticator ships the card directly to you via secure and discreet tracked shipping. All cards at this time will have signature-required delivery.
What impact do you think this has on the trading card world? Are you excited to see how eBay entering the authentication game changes the way we buy collectable cards?
