Illustration: Pokemon Tokyo 2020 Olympics

In this week’s illustration we celebrate the start of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with a Pokemon aquatic event including Pikachu, Charmander, Psyduck, Magikarp, and Blastoise.

The initial idea for this illustration stemmed from a Corocoro promotional jumbo card released in 1998 in conjunction with the release of the first Japanese Pokemon cinema short, Pikachu’s Summer Vacation.

The short would later release in North America alongside Pokemon The First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back. In the Jumbo card, Pikachu and Charmander look to be enjoying their time on the water in a rubber ring. For our Tokyo 2020 Olympics Pokemon illustration, we decided to be a little more realistic and show their frantic nature as they push for gold.
