With the announcement of a Pokémon Presents video for Pokémon’s 25th anniversary tomorrow, we thought we’d take a look back at the announcements from The Pokémon Direct for Pokémon’s 20th anniversary on February 26, 2016.
The announcements scheduled for tomorrow have been confirmed by The Pokémon Company to last 20 minutes long and will set the weekend up nicely before Pokémon Day on 27 February. In comparison, the 2016 announcement lasted only seven-minutes. Speculation is rife across the web highlighting potential Diamond and Pearl remakes as well as anniversary Pokémon TCG sets.
In 2016, Pokémon celebrated its 20th anniversary, 20 years after the original Red and Green games were released for Game Boy in Japan. The seven-minute presentation showcased the history of Pokémon, announced a new game for 3DS in the form of Pokémon Sun and Moon, and released Virtual Console versions of Red, Blue, and Yellow compatible with Pokémon Bank.

You’ll notice outside of game announcements there was no new information related to anniversary TCG sets that would release later that year such as XY: Evolutions. Fear not, however, one main difference between the announcements for Pokémon Day in 2016 versus the announcements we’re expecting tomorrow is that in 2016 the event was a Pokémon Direct hosted by Nintendo, these events are purely video game based. The 2021 Pokémon Day Pokémon Presents however is hosted by The Pokémon Company International (TPCI) which means anything Pokémon-related could be covered.
So, how do we temper our expectations to not feel a level of disappointment once the end credits roll? First of all, going into tomorrow’s 3 PM GMT announcement prepare for no TCG news beyond March’s Battle Styles set. By setting the expectations of this from the get-go, anything on top of this is a bonus.
We’ll see information surrounding Pokémon’s upcoming free-to-play multiplayer online battle game, Pokémon Unite as well as further announcements related to The Pokémon Sleep app.
Pokémon Unite
An announcement of a new game for Nintendo Switch is long overdue, hence the overwhelming amount of rumors surrounding Diamond & Pearl remakes for the game’s 15th anniversary. It’s safe to say there will be a new game announcement, in what form however, we’ll just have to wait and see.
We’ve all been patiently waiting for this special anniversary year and now that the information is so close to being in our hands we should leave the speculation at the door and wait until tomorrow grants our wishes. I’m not going to be able to sleep tonight in anticipation of what could be, I highly suggest you don’t let your mind run wild like mine and accept that whatever will be, will be.
Pokémon Presents 25th anniversary will be live from 3 PM GMT on YouTube
