VICE has released a short documentary focused on Pokemon TCG and the high values occupying the hobby in today’s current climate.
The VICE documentary focuses on the rise in prices of Pokemon TCG throughout the COVID-19 pandemic initially documenting the rise in customers from a local game store perspective (House of Cards and Collectibles, located in San Antonio Texas) as they swayed from a mainly sports card orientated store to Pokemon.
The video goes on to interview Charlie Hurlocker, director of US Operations for Ludkins Collectables showcasing some of his large collection as he comments on the accessibility of the hobby.
Mainstream attention from outlets such as VICE and Buzzfeed was to be expected with the rise in popularity of the hobby thanks to #Pokemon25 celebrations and celebrity interest. Over the weekend Pokemon hosted a virtual concert in collaboration with Post Malone that has amassed over 1.6 million views on YouTube as well as Logan Paul’s box break garnering 3 million views in less than 48 hours.
This short documentary by VICE focusing on Pokemon TCG is likely to drive further attention and potentially lead to more intrigue in the hobby.
We can expect to see further mainstream reporting on Pokemon as long as the value in our collections continues to rise. The current market value of some of the rarest cards in the hobby attracts outsiders looking in as they see an opportunity for further growth that they don’t want to miss out on.
Logan Paul’s stream on Pokemon day was a good example of this. The majority of buyers, not Pokemon collectors rather Cryptocurrency enthusiasts jumping on The Pokemon train to bolster their platform and improve their portfolios.
