‘Son Goku, the Awakened Power’ is a card that has soared in popularity over the last couple of years and is considered by some to be the Black Lotus or 1st Edition Shadowless Base Charizard of the Dragon Ball Super CG. Although this card rose to an incredible value during the start of 2021, there has been a steady decline ever since, with the latest PSA 10 copy selling through a PWCC auction for one of the lowest prices seen this year.
What is on Goku, The Awakened Power?
‘Son Goku, The Awakened Power’ was an SCR that came with the first themed booster of the Dragon Ball Super CG, Tournament of Power. This set got an incredibly limited print run as it launched when the TCG was still in its infancy. As new stock ceased to be manufactured, the rarest cards of the set, including the first four Signature Cards, rose in value and became grail cards for serious collectors
The PWCC Auction –
A PSA 10 copy of ‘Son Goku, The Awakened Power’ was recently part of the PWCC monthly auction, which sold for $3,700 on November 19th. This final bid price is among the lowest achieved for a PSA 10 copy this year with other copies selling this month for quite a bit more. One sold on November 13th through an eBay auction for $4,475, while another seller accepted an offer of $4250 on November 9th.
August through to October saw PSA 10 copies of ‘Son Goku, the Awakened Power’ selling for between $4350 and $6500. This grade of ‘Awakened Power’ hit its all-time record value back in March when it sold for $15,000, before dropping to around $11,000 and staying between $8000 and $10,000 up until June.
On June 14th 2021, ‘Son Goku, the Awakened Power’ made Dragon Ball Super CG history when a Becket Black Label Pristine 10 sold for an eye-watering $90,000 on the PWCC Marketplace. If you would like to learn more about this sale, you can check out our article here.
Why did the price rise so high?
Some people believe that the dramatic price increase of Awakened Power was a result of misinformation being circulated in order to increase its value. Back in July 2020, an SMR magazine article claimed that there were only 500 ‘Son Goku, the Awakened Power’ cards in existence. This, of course, cannot be true as there are currently 573 in the PSA registry. This information, along with the big TCG boom seen at the beginning of the year, contributed to its $15,000 peak.
‘Son Goku, The Awakened Power’ has remained the rarest card that can be pulled from a booster pack since the release of the Tournament of Power set. With that being said, it isn’t the most valuable card in the entire TCG, with the Metal Prize cards taking the top position.
