Rainbow Rares have polarised the Pokemon TCG community since their inception in the Sun & Moon era. With a Rainbow Rare Charizard VSTAR releasing in Brilliant Stars this February, we’ll see the first rainbow Charizard since September 2020. In this article, we thought we’d take a look at the most expensive Rainbow Rare cards of all time!
Disclaimer: this list is based on the most expensive English Pokemon TCG Rainbow Rares with sales data from TCGPlayer and eBay.
Number 5 – Lugia GX – Lost Thunder
TCGPlayer Market Value: $151
Gen 2’s legendary pokemon is a fan favourite Pokemon that’s had iconic artwork throughout the years. In 2018, Pokemon TCG: Lost Thunder took fans back to the Johto region with a rainbow Lugia as its main chase card. Lugia GX 227/214 regularly sells for over $130 in a near-mint condition and has proven to be a difficult modern card to grade. During the peak of Pokemon TCG popularity in 2020, Lugia GX in a PSA 10 was selling for above $1500 due to being a slightly more difficult card to grade than some other modern chases. Nowadays, you can fetch one of the 273 PSA 10s on eBay for around $700.
Number 4 – Reshiram & Charizard GX – Unbroken Bonds
TCGPlayer Market Value: $165
Reshiram & Charizard GX with its Statue of Liberty resemblance was a huge hitter back when Unbroken Bonds was released in 2019. This card is incredibly popular due to its Tag Team GX mechanic and difficulty to pull leading to high prices from the get-go. In 2022, most modern Pokemon TCG prices are trending downwards and Reshiram & Charizard GX 217/214 is no exception – raw copies can be found on eBay for around $130 and a PSA 10 will set you back anywhere from $400.
Number 3 – Pikachu VMAX – Vivid Voltage
TCGPlayer Market Value: $192
During what feels like a lifetime ago in the peak madness of 2020 Pokemon TCG hysteria, Vivid Voltage sprung onto the scene. Rainbow Chonkachu quickly became a fan favourite for many new collectors looking to pull a difficult to obtain, high-value card. As of writing this article, I’ve opened more than 250 Vivid Voltage booster packs and have yet to grace everyone’s favourite chubby mouse. Prices have drastically dropped since the days of $350+ raw Pikachu VMAX 188/185 and now the card can be purchased for around $180. If you’re looking to pick up a PSA 10, the card has a population of 1787 and a price that fluctuates between $600 and $700.
Number 2 – Charizard VMAX – Champion’s Path
TCGPlayer Market Value: $206
A card that I’ve coined the mascot of the pandemic, Charizard VMAX 074/073 was the card plastered across YouTube thumbnails in October 2020. Champion’s Path will go down as one of the poorest sets of recent history and that’s because outside of a Charizard V and VMAX there is absolutely nothing to write home about. Charizard VMAX Rainbow is a personal favourite due to the way that Sword & Shield’s brighter rainbow contrast merges with the VMAX Artwork. A raw copy will set you back between $170 and $200 depending on the condition. As for PSA 10s, a lot are going around. With over 10,000 copies graded of which, 7465 are PSA 10s, the price has decreased quite substantially since its release. PSA 10s can be found on eBay (at the time of writing) for $450.
Number 1 – Charizard GX – Burning Shadows
TCGPlayer Market Value: $380
When asked about Rainbow Rares, what card springs to mind? For many, it’s Charizard GX 150/147 from 2017’s Burning Shadows hence why it’s the most expensive Pokemon TCG Rainbow Rare of all. An ever-popular card that has proven its market value over the last few years, Rainbow Charizard GX is a standout Rainbow Rare. When looking on eBay there are many fakes of this card to filter through before determining a raw price – Charizard GX 150/147 sells for around $250. In terms of grading, this is the only card on the list where the population of PSA 10s is lower than the 9s with 755 copies compared to 1566. If you want to purchase a PSA 10 Charizard GX for your collection then you’ll need to fork out over $2000 with the last eBay sale closer to $3000.
