Toys ‘R’ Us is on the verge of returning to UK high streets in a spectacular comeback after falling into administration back in 2018. TCG fans rejoice!
In 2018, the global toy retailer shut around 100 stores across the UK leading to the loss of a huge TCG brick and mortar seller, something we don’t have enough of in the UK.
The Toys ‘R’ Us parent company, WHP Global announced on Wednesday to its investors that the company had signed a long-term deal for Toys ‘R’ Us and Babies ‘R’ Us to make their long-anticipated UK return in 2022.
This comes after the company relaunched the toy brand in Australia in 2019 to great success and continues to have success in North American, European, Asian, and Middle Eastern markets.
Initially, UK customers will be able to purchase online using the company’s existing Australian operations before opening up in physical stores towards the beginning of 2023.
This is fantastic news for the UK toy market as well as employment markets after the closure in 2018 led to over 3000 job cuts. For Pokemon TCG, Digimon TCG, and DBS Card Game fans, this now gives us an alternative large-scale retailer alongside Irish toy store Smyths.
For those of us that remember the original days of Pokemon TCG, Toys ‘R’ Us is a hugely nostalgic presence that was sorely missed. In the past, Pokemon has teamed up with Toys ‘R’ Us for promo cards and special releases, something we hope to return to UK shores.
Are you excited about the return of Toys ‘R’ Us? Do you have any memories from your childhood in the store? We would love to know!
