Pokemon fans rejoice, Generation 9 is upon us! Last week, during The Pokemon, Presents showcase in celebration of Pokemon Day, GameFreak gave us a brief glimpse at the next generation of Pokemon releasing in Late 2022. In this article, we’re going to take a look at the new starter Pokemon from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet as well as a brief history lesson on how Sword and Shield’s TCG launch happened to give us a better idea of when to expect Generation 9 Pokemon cards!
Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly are Generation 9’s upcoming starter Pokemon. The names would imply some kind of Spanish influence and with X and Y’s Kalos region in France, it would make sense for the next region to be based on Spain.
The Pokemon themselves have received widespread praise from the community and we’re all just holding our breaths waiting to see their typings and evolution forms. I’m team Fuecoco, fight me.
In terms of Pokemon TCG, I wanted to look back at the most recent new Generation launch schedule to determine when we’re likely to see these new awesome Pokemon on a Pokemon card. Back in November 2019, Pokemon Sword and Shield launched on Nintendo Switch. The TCG would see a Sword and Shield expansion hit Japanese shelves in December that year before the new era of Pokemon TCG hit the West in February. Sword and Shield Base set would give us the first appearances of Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble.
This means we can more than likely expect to see Pokémon Scarlet and Violet release in November/December 2022 with a Scarlet and Violet TCG expansion as soon as February 2023.
If you haven’t seen the trailer yet for the latest Pokemon game which is going to be the first open-world adventure, building on Sword and Shield’s wild areas and Legends: Arceus’ freedom then check it out below:
